Percent Problem Solving Feb 18

Working with Percents - Real Life Applications

Hello Students,

We use percents in our world all the time.  When we go out to eat we tip the servers on a percentage scale.  We pay interest on loans and collect interest on money that we deposit into the bank on a percentage scale.  We estimate things in our world on a daily basis using percentage.  Percentage is everywhere!

Task ONE:  Please read the examples here showing you how to MODEL percentage problems.  I have even copied the problems here for you on this page.  You MUST complete these problems on your own paper and folllow directions.  MRS. RUDDER WILL BE COLLECTING YOUR WORK UPON RETURN TO SCHOOL.

AFTER COMPLETION OF THIS ACTIVITY YOU MUST MAKE A COMMENT BELOW OF AT LEAST 3 COMPLETE SENTENCES THAT TELL HOW YOU DID, WHAT CHALLENGES YOU MIGHT HAVE HAD AND HOW WELL OR DIFFERENTLY YOU MODELED THE PROBLEMS WITH A TAPE DIAGRAM

This page is all a duplicate of the following PDF/Powerpoint.

This page ALSO has a link to check your answers.

The PDF/Powerpoint  has the answers too.

ANSWERS TO THE PROBLEMS ABOVE

Don't forget................AFTER COMPLETION OF THIS ACTIVITY YOU MUST MAKE A COMMENT BELOW OF AT LEAST 3 COMPLETE SENTENCES THAT TELL HOW YOU DID, WHAT CHALLENGES YOU MIGHT HAVE HAD AND HOW WELL OR DIFFERENTLY YOU MODELED THE PROBLEMS WITH A TAPE DIAGRAM.

I had a pretty easy time doing these problems, but it took a while to make my tape diagram and show my calculations of what i got. I didn't get number 2 because In my opinion I thought It was worded weirdly so I didn't know what to simplify and what else to do. Most of the tape diagrams were easy to do and the models helped out a lot showing me a quick example to make my diagrams.

I agree with you Jackson on how it was easy and it took a while for the tape diagrams. with # 2 if this type of wording comes up again just read the problem again a couple times. You could also try to look at the problem a different way so you can try to get what the problem is saying.

I think I did pretty well for the most part. I had a little trouble with problem 4, because I got the prices confused with the prices from problem 3, but when I read it again I saw my mistake. I think the tape diagram is an efficient method to use in problems involving percentages, once you understand the proper way to use it.

Also, in the title for slide one, shouldn’t it say ‘percentages’ instead of ‘percents’?

I think I did okay, though, I spent more time on one problem (#3), than others. The tape diagrams are very helpful only if you make it correctly. Some problems, I had to carefully read to understand the problem thoroughly. I also had to go back to the examples a couple of time's, to understand how to solve some problems. Some problems like #2, #4, #5, #7, I do not think that we need a tape diagram for solve these problems.

I think I did pretty well on the problems. It was challenging at first because it was hard to figure out the original price. But once I looked at the examples enough times it was pretty easy. The tape diagrams I had no problem with. That was probably the easiest part.

Good job so far everyone! Hope you have had a good couple of days. Robert, I agree with what you said about really not needing tape diagrams. You can solve these without tape diagrams but modeling mathematics is an important thing to be able to do. Lots of things in life have to be modeled. It's a different way of learning - sometimes it helps us really "ingrain" the concepts better or show someone else the concept in a more visual and concrete way. Thanks to all of you for doing these problems. It is good that you went back through the examples if needed. I did that too! This can serve as a kind of study guide!

I had a pretty easy time solving these. N number two I was confused at first with the wording but after I figured it out it was very easy. I agree with Robert and ms.rudder that on some you did not need to use the tape diagrams

I think that I did well on all of them except for number 3 which I didn't know what it meant when it said that the original price was $27.00 more than half of the sale price. I feel i did good at the tape diagrams and figuring out what the problem was asking. To get the answer to some of the questions had to read the question many times to under stand what it was asking for me to do.

Chris, you should go back and look at the examples. Above, in the "more sample problems", there was a problem exactly like this. These are the kinds of problems that we will need to know how to solve. Use this as a study guide. Looking over the samples again and again helps.

I think I did well on all of them but I will admit that I found the tape diagrams very confusing until I did the algebraic way. I still find the algebraic way easier to understand and quicker to do. The ones I had the most trouble with was #3 & #6. Number 3 because it took me a min to realize how to do the $27 more than half price. #6 wasn't confusing in how to solve, it was that when I was checking my answers and I thought I was wrong but what it was is that the answer sheet says $0.36*5 which is correct but it was added to the other prices. This caused the final answer to include the original price and not the discounted price of the spoons.

I think I did well once I started to understand the tape diagram and the percents. I think it was hard at first because I knew what to do but it was on the tip of my tongue and I got mad because I cou understand anything. It took me a while to get used to using a tape diagram again.

Using tape diagrams is something we all need to be able to do. Again, this is modeling mathematics. Stay with this guys. Sometimes the modeling is harder than actually figuring out the problem algebraically, as Katie pointed out.

I found that most of my answers were correct. On the incorrect ones, I was confused with the wording and question(s). On problem 5, according to the key, I was "wrong", although I believe that you forgot to round 30% of the 3rd outfit. You might have solved this in a different way, using a different equation. The tape diagrams allowed an easy way to organize my work, but when the problem became a higher multi-step, with more numbers to factor in it got a little bit jumbled.

I did not have a lot of trouble with theses problems, they were pretty straight forward and simple. For some of the problems you didn't have to use the tape diagrams. But for some of the problems the tape diagrams helped a lot in solving the percent problems.

I finished the work and the paper from the other days. I did pretty well. I found these problems very easy and the tape diagram helped well. once I started I went through it kind of fast knowing what to do. I turned my paper in to day and did not comment back on Wednesday but I think I got them all right or made a little error and missed one.
